ARTHUR AVENUE, BRONX

YopCity

An Abidjan-style maquis on Arthur Avenue — fried croaker, attiéké and garba.

YopCity is named for Yopougon, the sprawling, nightlife-heavy district of Abidjan, and it is the least expected storefront on Arthur Avenue: an Ivorian maquis in the middle of the Bronx's Little Italy, with soccer on the televisions and a menu built around the food of Abidjan's streets. The owner started by selling garba — fried tuna over attiéké with raw onion, tomato and chile — out of his basement nearby before opening the restaurant.

Order the whole fried croaker, crusted in spice, with a mound of attiéké beside it; add dibi (grilled lamb) or grilled guinea fowl if you are sharing. It makes a strong argument for walking past the cannoli shops for once.

Editor’s tip

Get the whole fried croaker with attiéké, and ask whether garba is on today.
