ARTHUR AVENUE, BRONX
Zero Otto Nove
Roberto Paciullo's Salerno trattoria — wood-fired pizza and baked pastas in a room built like a piazza.
Roberto Paciullo named his Arthur Avenue trattoria after the telephone area code of Salerno, the city he left in 1970, and the room — built out like a Campanian piazza, wood-fired oven glowing at the back — cooks like a homesick letter. The salad-topped and butternut-squash pizzas from that oven are the headline, but the baked pastas and Salerno-style fish dishes are why tables of Bronx families keep it loud on weekends.
Since opening in 2007 it has become the approachable middle of Arthur Avenue dining: more polished than a pizzeria, more relaxed than Mario's, priced for a Tuesday. Come at lunch after the Retail Market, or make it the dinner that ends a Belmont afternoon.
Editor’s tip
Order a pizza from the wood oven for the table even if you are here for pasta — the La Riccardo with butternut squash cream is the house signature.
