UPPER WEST SIDE, MANHATTAN

Belvedere Castle

A Victorian folly built for one job: the best mid-park view there is.

The folly over Turtle Pond from the Great Lawn side.

Belvedere means 'beautiful view' in Italian, and the castle is pure Victorian honesty about its purpose: a miniature Gothic folly Calvert Vaux set on Vista Rock in 1869 purely to give the park a lookout and the Mall's sightline something to end on. It was never anyone's home. Its towers and terraces exist so you can climb them.

From the pavilions, Turtle Pond lies directly below with the Great Lawn spreading beyond it and the Delacorte Theater at its elbow; the San Remo and the El Dorado rim the trees to the west. The castle is also a working weather station — official Central Park temperature readings have been taken here for generations, which is why the forecast says 'the park reached 90 today' with such confidence.

Editor’s tip

Pair it with the Shakespeare Garden on the slope just southwest — the path up through the garden is the prettiest approach to the castle.
