WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN

Domino Park

A sugar refinery's riverfront, kept crane-and-tank intact and handed to the neighborhood.

The syrup tanks and bridge from the south lawn.

For 148 years the Domino Sugar Refinery stood on this stretch of Williamsburg waterfront; when refining ended, a quarter-mile of its riverfront became this park, and the industrial inheritance was kept on display rather than scrapped. Four of the refinery's great steel syrup tanks, salvaged cranes, and a long elevated walkway on original columns run the park's length, all facing the Williamsburg Bridge and the midtown skyline across the river.

It's a compact park that uses every foot: a boardwalk at the water, a taco stand in a shipping-container kiosk, bocce courts, a sugar-factory-themed playground, and terraced lawns that fill with the whole neighborhood on warm evenings. The landmarked refinery building looms behind it all, redeveloped but keeping its brick shell — the rare waterfront where the history is load-bearing.

Editor’s tip

Climb the elevated walkway at the north end — it puts the old crane rails underfoot and lines the bridge up over the syrup tanks.
