Distance and timing are editorial estimates along the suggested streets, not a live routing calculation — treat them as a generous guide.

This is the classic New York walk, and it earns the reputation. You start under the government buildings of lower Manhattan, climb onto a wooden promenade strung between Gothic stone towers, and cross the East River with the harbor opening on one side and the bridges stacking up on the other. The crossing itself takes about half an hour; most people take longer, and should.

On the Brooklyn side, the walk changes character twice. First come DUMBO's Belgian-block streets and warehouse brick, with the Manhattan Bridge framed between buildings like a stage set. Then, after a pastry on Water Street, you climb into Brooklyn Heights — all brownstones and street trees — and come out on the Promenade, a long balcony hung over the harbor with the whole of lower Manhattan laid out across the water.

  1. 1
    City Hall Park~10 min

Start by the fountain in City Hall Park, then follow the signs to the bridge's pedestrian entrance across Centre Street.

  2. 2

The elevated walkway runs down the center of the bridge. Pause at mid-span between the towers — harbor and Statue of Liberty to the south, the Manhattan Bridge and midtown to the north.

The Roeblings' boardwalk in the sky — still the city's best mile on foot.

  3. 3

The famous view: the Manhattan Bridge tower framed dead-center down a cobblestone street, with the Empire State Building threaded through the arch. Expect company.

The bridge-framed block that made DUMBO's name — and it looks exactly as advertised.

  4. 4

A restored 1922 carousel turning inside a glass pavilion at the river's edge. Lovely in motion, lovelier at dusk when the lights come on.

Forty-eight restored horses spinning in a glass box between the bridges.

  5. 5

Cross the Empire Fulton Ferry lawn under the bridge anchorage. The pebble beach at the water line gives the closest view of the bridge's underside you can get with dry shoes.

A mile of dead cargo piers reborn as Brooklyn's front porch on the harbor.

  6. 6

A French bakery on Water Street, well placed for a croissant or an éclair before the climb into the Heights.

The French bakery two minutes from the bridges — buy the almond croissant, eat it on the waterfront.

  7. 7

Finish on the Promenade, a third of a mile of benches and flower beds cantilevered over the harbor. The skyline view at golden hour is the best free seat in the city.

Manhattan at exactly the right distance, from a terrace floating over the BQE.

Practical tips

  • Walk on the Brooklyn-bound side's marked pedestrian lane and watch for the bike lane — cyclists have their own level now, but the entrances still mix.
  • The bridge is exposed: wind off the harbor is real in every season, so bring a layer even on warm days.
  • Public restrooms are easiest to find in Brooklyn Bridge Park near the carousel; there is little between City Hall and the Brooklyn side.

Scenic detours

  • From the Promenade, drop down Montague Street for coffee or an early dinner on Brooklyn Heights' main shopping street.
  • With an extra half hour, continue south through the park to Pier 1's waterfront lawns, or ride the NYC Ferry home from Fulton Ferry Landing.
