IllustrationA tiny, candlelit bistro on Nostrand Avenue run by a couple from Istanbul and Hamburg — he cooks, she serves — with a single bartender who can talk you into one more glass of Austrian red. The records are good, and on the right night service turns into a small dance party.
The food is a little Turkish, a little German and a little whatever they felt like cooking. The chicken schnitzel is essential, as are the lamb kebabs over buttered rice; grated carrots cooked down with labneh and sausage as a starter round things out. Start with a Negroni, or try the Vodkalicious if you have no bad memories of vodka-cran.
Editor’s tip
Sit at the bar, order the schnitzel before the wine takes over, and check Instagram in summer — the couple has traditionally closed for August.
