A&A Bake & Doubles

James Beard-honored Trinidadian doubles on Fulton Street — soft bara, curried channa, tamarind and pepper.

A double is the breakfast of Port of Spain: two pieces of soft fried bara folded around curried channa, sauced with tamarind, cucumber chutney and as much pepper as you can stand. Noel and Geeta Brown started selling them from a tiny cash-only counter on Nostrand Avenue and later moved around the corner to this larger Fulton Street room. In 2019 the James Beard Foundation named the shop an America's Classic, which tells you something about how good a two-dollar-and-change breakfast can be.

Order at least one double per person, then build out: aloo pie, pholourie with tamarind, a fish double, and a roti wrapped around potato and goat. The bara here is pillowy and the channa well seasoned, and the line in the morning is mostly regulars who order without looking up. Come early — the best things go first.

Editor’s tip

Ask for your doubles with slight pepper the first time, and get them before noon — items sell out.
