IllustrationCafé Grumpy opened this Essex Street shop in the spring of 2011 in the former home of Zelig Blumenthal's Judaica store, and kept the bones: exposed original brick, two windows uncovered during the build-out, and the old colorful tile floor underfoot.
There is no Wi-Fi, which is the point. Order an espresso or a pour-over of the house-roasted coffee, take one of the outdoor benches when the weather allows, and watch the corner of Essex and Canal wake up.
Editor’s tip
Come in the morning, leave the laptop at home, and take your cup to the bench outside.
