IllustrationRandy McLaren opened this Howard Avenue slice shop in 2018 and built it on toppings no one else was putting on pizza: oxtail, jerk chicken, jerk shrimp, chicken and waffles, black truffle alfredo shrimp. Videos of celebrities eating here have been watched millions of times, and on weekends the street fills with double-parked cars.
The order is the Sweet Chili Oxtail, drawing on McLaren's Trinidadian roots — oxtail marinated and slow-cooked for hours, then laid over a cheesy base on a chewy, almost biscuit-like crust. It has grown to Queens and the Lower East Side, but this is where it started.
Editor’s tip
Get the Sweet Chili Oxtail, plus one jerk slice if you are with someone to share.
