IllustrationImmigrants from Gottschee, in present-day Slovenia, settled in Ridgewood in the late nineteenth century, and in 1924 they built this hall under its royal-blue awning. The big banquet room with its chandeliers still hosts the occasional honky-tonk night, but the life of the place is the small, wood-paneled bar.
Order a mug of German beer and a schnitzel or a warm pretzel, and settle in among neighbors watching soccer. In warm months there is a beer garden; check the official site for events.
Editor’s tip
Come on a weekend afternoon when there's a match on, and order the schnitzel with your beer.
