AirTrainNJ TransitExpress busArriving in New York · Newark Liberty International
Newark is in New Jersey, so the rules change: a train ticket instead of a tap, a zone price for taxis, and an express bus to Midtown.
Fares and rules checked against the Port Authority, MTA and NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission on October 16, 2026.
*Door-to-door times are our estimates to Midtown and swing with traffic, waits and time of day.
Step by step
The train: AirTrain Newark, then NJ Transit to Penn Station
About 45–60 minutes to Midtown · $17.25
Until November 13, 2026, shuttle buses replace the AirTrain between the terminals and the Airport Train Station from 5am to 3pm on most weekdays. Allow extra time.
Your terminal
Follow the AirTrain signs and ride to the Newark Liberty International Airport Station. You don't pay to board; the fare is collected at the station's gate.

New York Penn Station
You arrive at 34th Street and Seventh Avenue in Midtown. The A, C, E and 1, 2, 3 subways are in the station; from here, contactless tap-to-pay works again ($3).
New Jersey rules
How paying works: a ticket first, then tap in New York
1
Buy an NJ Transit ticket
At Newark, buy a train ticket to New York Penn Station in the NJ Transit app or at a machine in the airport station. Don't count on tapping your card for this train.
2
The ticket opens the AirTrain gate
NJ Transit and Amtrak tickets from the airport station include the AirTrain fare. Scan the ticket at the AirTrain gate, then keep it for the conductor.
3
In New York, tap for the subway
Once you reach Penn Station, New York's tap-to-pay system takes over: tap a contactless card or phone at the turnstile, $3 a ride.
4
Stick to one card all week
Pay for 12 subway or bus rides on the same card or phone within any 7 days ($35) and the rest of that week is free. Each traveler needs their own card or phone to count toward it.
- New York's subway tap-to-pay doesn't work on NJ Transit trains or the AirTrain Newark gates.
- Fares on NJ Transit rose in July 2026. $17.25 is the Port Authority's published fare to Penn Station; the app shows the exact price when you buy.
- Your phone and the physical card in it count as two different payment methods for New York's weekly cap. Pick one and keep using it.

These are the Port Authority's published estimates for taxis leaving Newark. Ask the dispatcher at the taxi stand for a receipt with your fare.
Yellow taxi
- Take a taxi only from the official taxi stand on the arrivals level, where a dispatcher assigns your cab.
- New York City's yellow-cab rules don't apply here: a cab from Newark is a New Jersey taxi with its own prices.
Uber and Lyft
- Terminal A: arrivals level, across the street. Terminal B: the arrivals frontage. Terminal C: Floor 3 of the Terminal C garage.
- Uber also runs a shared shuttle from Terminals B and C to Midtown; the price is shown in the app.
