Chef Papa Vietnamese Kitchen is a family-run restaurant on 162nd Street, just south of Northern Boulevard in the Broadway-Flushing and Murray Hill corner of Queens. The chef, Truong, was born and raised in Vietnam and learned to cook in his family's kitchen before spending years in New York's professional kitchens; he opened this first restaurant in Flushing with his son, during the height of the pandemic. The restaurant has since added a second location in Long Island City, but this is the original. The room is casual and welcoming, with the feel of a neighborhood standby where families come for big bowls of soup and grilled meats to share.

Pho is the house signature, offered in several styles including short rib and pork chop versions, and the restaurant also highlights bánh mì and bánh xèo, the crisp Vietnamese pancake folded around fillings and eaten with herbs. Vermicelli bowls, grilled meats, spring rolls and rice dishes round out the menu, and much of it is offered as catering for parties. Chef Papa was featured by the YouTuber New York Turk in 2025, who visited for a solo dinner. Plan a weekday lunch or an early dinner, and note that the Flushing location keeps its own schedule separate from Long Island City. Online ordering and reservations are handled through the restaurant's website.

Editor’s tip

Order a pho for yourself and a bánh xèo for the table; check the Flushing location's own hours on the website, since it differs from Long Island City.
