UPPER EAST SIDE, MANHATTAN

Chez Fifi

A townhouse bistro of dark wood, fur coats and a Calder upstairs — the Upper East Side at its most Parisian.

See current Google rating & reviews ↗

A French bistro in an Upper East Side townhouse from the brothers behind Sushi Noz: a low-ceilinged, dark-wood room, wine poured into vanishingly thin glasses, Edith Piaf on the stereo, and furs whisked off to the coat check. Ask for a cigarette and it comes on a silver tray.

Upstairs, in the salon, a Calder and a Miró hang near a black marble fireplace, and the mood loosens. Downstairs the menu runs to a family-recipe roast chicken carved over foie gras jus, fat frogs' legs in persillade, Basque-style deviled crab baked in its shell, and a thick terrine. Come for the room and the theater of it.

Editor’s tip

For a lighter night, go upstairs to the salon for charcuterie, dessert and a cocktail among the art.
