Essex began in the old Essex Street Market and in 2019 moved into the century-old Schapiro's Winery building on Rivington Street, a multi-level space big enough for parties of 200. It calls itself the originator of the Lower East Side's bottomless brunch party, and weekends still run on it.

At dinner the kitchen leans Mediterranean steakhouse, with dry-aged steaks and kofta meatballs, and oysters are cheap at happy hour. Its Thanksgiving feast is now in its 18th year.
