Gabriel Ignacio came to the Bronx from Puebla in 2004 and worked his way up through Manhattan kitchens — Boucherie, Minetta Tavern, chef de cuisine at Valerie — with a plan to open his own place by forty. In the spring of 2025 he took an offer to run a food stand inside the Ogden Supermarket in Highbridge. A few months later the supermarket moved across the street, and Golden Taquitos was left alone in a vast, half-finished concrete room with a deli counter and a few metal tables. He stayed, and the city found him.

Everything is made from scratch, down to the nixtamal for the tortillas. The chilaquiles verde torta — chilaquiles stacked into a roll, best with chorizo — is the order that critics have called the best torta in New York. Add adobada tacos, a double shrimp tostada, a birria quesadilla, or a chorizo breakfast burrito in the morning. It is a ten-minute walk from Yankee Stadium, which makes it the smartest pregame meal in the borough.

Editor’s tip

Order the chilaquiles verde torta with chorizo, and come for breakfast before a day game.
