SUNNYSIDE, QUEENS
I Love Paraguay
New York's rare Paraguayan dining room — sopa paraguaya, chipa guasú and empanadas on Greenpoint Avenue.
For years this family-run room on Greenpoint Avenue has been described, with some justification, as the only Paraguayan restaurant in New York — a small dining room where expats come for a taste of Asunción and everyone else comes to find out what that tastes like.
Start with sopa paraguaya, which is not a soup at all but a dense, cheesy cornbread, and chipa guasú, its softer, soufflé-like cousin. Add empanadas and a chipa, the chewy cheese bread made with cassava starch, then ask about the soup of the day. It is quiet, homely cooking, and the family will gladly talk you through it. Some items sell out, so an earlier visit is the safer bet.
Editor’s tip
Order both sopa paraguaya and chipa guasú to taste the difference, and ask what the daily soup is.
