Wah Sing is a neighborhood Chinese takeout restaurant on Rockaway Avenue in Ocean Hill, on the eastern edge of Bedford-Stuyvesant, a few steps from the Rockaway Avenue subway station. It belongs to one of New York's most beloved and least celebrated traditions: the family-style takeout counter with a lit-up menu board, a phone that never stops ringing and a kitchen that turns out American Chinese classics fast and hot from lunch until late evening. Places like this are woven into the daily life of the city, feeding students after school, workers on the way home and families who order the same dishes every Friday. Wah Sing carries an A grade from the health department and a loyal neighborhood following.

The orders regulars return to are the canon of New York Chinese takeout: General Tso's chicken, shrimp fried rice, lo mein, pepper steak and egg drop soup, with fortune cookies in the bag. Reviewers also single out the honey walnut shrimp, very crisp and lighter on the sauce than many versions. Portions are built for sharing or for tomorrow's lunch. Wah Sing was featured by the YouTuber New York Turk in 2025 in a video about what a meal costs in different corners of the city. Call ahead for pickup to skip the wait, or eat standing at the counter while your order comes off the wok.

Editor’s tip

Order the honey walnut shrimp alongside a takeout classic; it is the dish locals point to.
