Eight minutes by ferry from the bottom of Manhattan sits a car-free island of parade grounds, hammock groves, and hills built from the rubble of old army buildings. Governors Island spent two centuries as a military post; now it is the city's favorite escape hatch — rental bikes gliding past Civil War-era officers' houses, picnics on the lawns, and the best close-up view of the Statue of Liberty this side of a boat ticket.

Climb the Hills at the island's south end for the harbor panorama, wander the historic district's shaded quads, and give the afternoon away to doing very little. Ferries leave from the Battery Maritime Building; the island's public season, ferry schedule, and fares shift year to year, so check the official site before you plan the day.
