The New York Transit Museum lives in a decommissioned subway station in Downtown Brooklyn, formerly Court Street, and that setting is what makes it. Downstairs, on real track, sits a fleet of vintage subway cars you can walk through, spanning more than a century of the system's rolling stock, while the galleries above explain how the city's transit was dug, powered and run. The museum turned 50 in 2026 and celebrated with shuttle rides on vintage trains between the museum and Hoyt-Schermerhorn.

Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for children 2 to 17 and seniors as of October 2026; buy online, and note that groups of eight or more need a reserved program. Parts of the old station aren't climate-controlled, so dress for the season. The bigger prize is a Nostalgia Ride: several times a year the museum runs vintage trains on regular lines, from season openers at Citi Field and Yankee Stadium to summer runs to Coney Island and the Rockaways and holiday rides in December. Members can also book rare tours of the closed City Hall station, which require a background check.
