The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, one of The New York Public Library's research libraries, holds more than 11 million items documenting African American, African Diasporic and African experiences, and it builds on the legacy of the collector Arturo Schomburg with free public exhibitions, talks and performances. Even a short visit to its galleries at Malcolm X Boulevard and 135th Street puts you in front of rare documents, art and photographs, in a building that sits at the cultural heart of Harlem.

Admission is free, the building is fully accessible, and the center is open Monday through Saturday. Researchers can book appointments with its divisions, and groups can request a free one-hour guided tour through the Schomburg Tours page. The shop sells books, clothing and jewelry by Black and Brown artists for all ages. Note that NYPL doesn't allow e-bikes or electric scooters inside. Check the exhibitions page before you go, then walk a few blocks north and west to see the rowhouses of Strivers' Row.
