The Duplex opened in 1951 on Grove Street and moved to Sheridan Square, at 61 Christopher Street, in 1989. It calls itself a gay bar, piano bar and cabaret theater, and it has kept all three going for decades: a downstairs piano bar where the bartenders and servers sing, and an upstairs room for drag, comedy and cabaret acts. Upstairs and down, it has been a training ground for cabaret performers for generations.

The piano bar is walk-in and free to enter; tip the pianist and the singers. Upstairs shows are ticketed individually through the club's website, often with a drink minimum. Weeknights are relaxed and good for a first visit; weekends run late and loud. It sits across from Christopher Park and the Stonewall Inn, so it fits naturally into an evening in the West Village's LGBTQ+ history. Bring small bills for tips.
