Few buildings in New York carry as much legend as the Hotel Chelsea on West 23rd Street. Built in 1884, it has sheltered a roll call of artists, writers and musicians that its own history page lists by surname alone: Twain, Dylan, Cohen, Joplin, Mapplethorpe, Kerouac and many more. After a long closure it reopened in 2022, remade, in the MICHELIN Guide's words, in jewel tones, animal print and stained glass, with artwork on display throughout.
The restoration kept the bohemian soul and added a lively food and drink scene: Café Chelsea, the Lobby Bar, El Quijote and Teruko Japanese all sit within the building. Rooms range from the Petite Chelsea to loft and two-bedroom suites. It suits creative travelers, music lovers and couples who want a story with their stay, and the Chelsea galleries, the High Line and the Hudson are all a short walk west. Stay up late at least once; this is a hotel built for conversation.
Editor’s tip
Reserve El Quijote or the Lobby Bar through the hotel's own booking page before you arrive, then walk west to the Chelsea galleries.
