On a leafy block of East 76th Street, a short walk from Central Park, The Surrey has been quietly reimagined as Corinthia's first hotel in North America. The building first opened as a hotel in 1926, and its new interiors by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio lean residential rather than grand: 70 rooms and 30 suites, with four signature suites inspired by Central Park's bridges. Art curated by the Paris-based VISTO Gallery brings in work by established and emerging New York artists, so the corridors read more like a private collection than a hotel.

Downstairs, Casa Tua runs an Italian and Mediterranean restaurant and an intimate lounge alongside a members' club, and the second-floor Surrey Spa, created with Sisley, adds a salt wall, steam room, sauna and an outdoor terrace. It suits couples who want the Upper East Side at its most composed: mornings on Madison Avenue, afternoons at the Met or in the park, evenings that never need to leave the building. For a first visit to the city it is calm; for a return visit it feels like borrowing a beautifully kept apartment.

Editor’s tip

If the trip marks an occasion, ask about the four signature suites inspired by Central Park's bridges, which sit on the top floor.
