IllustrationA corner slice shop near where Port Richmond Avenue meets Forest Avenue, Brother's has been open since 1975 and works the way slice shops always have: order at the counter in front, take a seat in the back or carry it out. It is the fast, cheap counterpoint to Denino's sit-down pies a few blocks north, and a reliable stop when you want a slice and not a production. It has been doing exactly this, on the same corner, for nearly fifty years.
Always start with a plain slice. Then try the upside-down square, with the mozzarella under a slightly sweeter sauce in the Staten Island style, or the thick vodka square topped with fresh mozzarella. Garlic knots are the side. Bring cash, and don't expect frills — that is the appeal. Pair it with a walk down Port Richmond Avenue's Mexican bakeries and groceries, or with a whole pie at Denino's if you have room for a second stop.
Editor’s tip
Get a plain slice and an upside-down square together to taste the difference.
