IllustrationClaus Holtermann, a German immigrant, started baking in 1878 in the village of Richmond — today's Historic Richmond Town — first in the old Treasure House, then in a candy factory on Centre Street, before the family moved down Arthur Kill Road to this storefront between Miles Avenue and Giffords Lane. Five generations later, Holtermanns still run it, and it is one of the oldest family businesses on Staten Island.
Come for the charlotte russe, the old New York street-corner sweet: sponge cake with raspberry jam under a tower of whipped cream and a cherry, in a paper collar you push up from the bottom as you eat. City Lore has called Holtermann's the only place in the city where it is still made regularly. Then fill a box: crumb cake, lemon flips, cowboy cookies with oats, peanuts and coconut, and a Pullman loaf of white bread baked in a lidded pan for the week's sandwiches.
Editor’s tip
Buy a charlotte russe to eat on the spot and a crumb cake for later — and go early on weekends.
