IllustrationMarina Cafe has looked out over Great Kills Harbor since 1980, its glass-walled dining room facing a basin full of sailboats and fishing boats. Hurricane Sandy wrecked the place in 2012 and kept it closed for more than a year; it came back with a big outdoor deck and a tiki bar that runs through the warm months, and it has been the South Shore's waterfront dinner ever since.
Inside, the menu is classic surf and turf, with an early-bird prix fixe and a weekday happy hour at the indoor bar. Outside at the tiki bar, keep it lighter: oysters, littleneck clams and shrimp cocktail from the raw bar, fish tacos, a burger. Friday and Saturday nights bring music and drink specials, and the restaurant hosts weddings and banquets, so expect a celebration or two.
Editor’s tip
On a warm evening, book a deck table for sunset and start with a dozen oysters from the tiki bar's raw bar.
