Dinner jackets, pressed linen and reinvented Italian-American classics inside the Puck Building.

Major Food Group's Italian-American restaurant on the ground floor of the landmark Puck Building, where waiters wear dinner jackets and the linens are pressed but the room still hums. The menu is à la carte, and the trick of the place is that the dishes look familiar until you taste them.

Think tuna with pickled caponata, penne with sautéed baby chanterelles in a butter sauce, and an Italian riff on Dover sole with a Francese sauce. Finish with the affogato, which arrives in an oversized martini glass with vanilla ice cream, fudge and espresso granita. It is one of the hardest tables downtown, and it dresses the part.
