Umberto's Clam House

The Mulberry Street clam house with the most notorious history in Little Italy, still serving seafood and pasta.

Umberto's opened in 1972 on the corner of Mulberry and Hester Streets, and two months later it entered the city's crime history: on April 7, 1972, Joey Gallo was shot there during his 43rd-birthday dinner. The restaurant has moved twice since, and today it sits across the street from that original corner, which now holds a different Italian restaurant, Da Gennaro.

The menu is red-sauce Little Italy, built on seafood and pasta: start with clams, as the name insists, then a plate of linguine. It is busy, unpretentious and very much a Mulberry Street institution, so book a table on weekends and during the September feast.

Editor’s tip

Order clams first, then walk across Mulberry to the corner at Hester Street where the original Umberto's stood.
