The Comedy Cellar

Short sets, close tables, and the ever-present chance of an unannounced drop-in.

The low-ceilinged room under MacDougal Street is the most famous comedy club in America, and it runs like a workshop as much as a showcase: a rotating lineup of working comics doing short sets, with the standing possibility that someone very famous wanders in to try new material unannounced. That possibility is real enough that regulars barely blink when it happens.

Shows run nightly across a couple of rooms, tables are packed close, and the energy is better for it. Reserve ahead on the club's site — weekend shows sell out — and expect a drink minimum alongside the cover. Lineups are posted but never guaranteed, which is honestly part of the appeal.
