Mmuseumm occupies an old freight elevator opening onto Cortlandt Alley, a narrow downtown passage just south of Canal Street, and it remains one of the smallest and most original museums in New York. Behind its rusted steel doors, brightly lit shelves hold vernacular objects: the everyday, accidental and strange things that explain how people live now, each one labeled with the care a larger museum might give to a masterpiece. A nonprofit, it describes itself as a public service exploring the modern world and the human condition through ordinary things.

Public hours are Saturdays and Sundays, and the museum has added a second, larger experience at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, also open on weekends. Admission details aren't posted on the homepage, so check before you go. The alley space takes 15 to 30 minutes, longer if you read every label, which you should; the 2026 exhibition catalog is available to order. Combine it with a walk through Tribeca and the edge of Chinatown; the alley itself, all loading docks and graffiti, is part of the experience.
