Up a stairwell at 275 Church Street, the MELA Foundation keeps the Dream House, a sound and light environment by the composer La Monte Young and the visual artist Marian Zazeela, later joined by Jung Hee Choi. The foundation calls it a time installation, measured by a setting of continuous frequencies in sound and light, and it is now in its thirty-third year. Nothing happens and everything does: walk slowly, sit, and notice how the sustained sound seems to shift with every step and turn of the head. It is one of the most singular artworks in New York, and it asks only for time.

The Dream House opens Wednesday through Saturday, from afternoon into the evening, and admission is $10 as of October 2026. There's no set visit length; stay twenty minutes or an hour. Keep quiet, put your phone away and move slowly, both for the work and for the people lying still nearby. The foundation occasionally closes early for concerts, so check the homepage before you go. The 1 train at Franklin Street and the A, C and E at Canal Street are a short walk away.
