The Bronx Zoo opened on November 8, 1899, and is still the Wildlife Conservation Society's flagship park: 265 acres of hardwood forest and exhibits on the south side of Bronx Park, home to more than 11,000 animals of over 640 species. Its size is the point. A full day still leaves much of the map unseen, so regulars pick one corner per visit and come back for the rest.

It has long been a working institution as much as an attraction. In 1916 it opened what WCS calls the first modern zoo animal hospital, with full-time veterinarians, and the park still serves as a hub for the society's conservation work around the world. For a day out, the useful fact is closer to home. The Southern Boulevard Gate, between East 183rd and 185th Streets, is about ten minutes on foot from Arthur Avenue, so the zoo and lunch in Belmont fit easily into one day.

In winter the zoo has a second life after dark. On select nights from late November into early January, Holiday Lights fills the paths with animal lanterns and light displays around a holiday tree. Tickets are for a specific night and must be reserved in advance, and the event runs rain or shine. Dress for it, because nearly all of it is outdoors.

Editor’s tip

From Belmont, use the Southern Boulevard Gate, and pick up the cannoli on your way back rather than carrying them around the zoo.
