EAST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN

The Bowery Hotel

A new hotel that arrived pre-aged — velvet, firelight, and the East Village outside the door.

The Bowery Hotel opened in 2007 looking a hundred years older on purpose: a brick tower of oriental rugs, velvet armchairs, fireplaces, and a lobby bar lit like a Victorian club. The effect could have been costume; instead it became one of downtown's most loved rooms, as busy with locals as with guests.

Rooms trade on light — factory-scale windows over a low-rise stretch of the East Village — and on the sense that downtown is at the door rather than past a lobby cordon. Gemma, the hotel's trattoria, anchors the ground floor, and the terrace bar is a warm-weather fixture.

Editor’s tip

Have one drink in the lobby bar even if you are not staying — it is the best-lit room on the Bowery.
