Date Night in Chelsea: Romantic Restaurants and Bars (2026)
A candlelit hall below Chelsea Market, a Basque bar on Ninth Avenue, paella at the Hotel Chelsea and a gin bar behind a secret door — where to take a date in Chelsea, from dinner to a nightcap.
12 restaurants

Chelsea's evenings run along the avenues. On Ninth Avenue the restaurants stack up between Chelsea Market and 25th Street — a Basque bar, a Southern Italian pasta bar, a candlelit hall below street level — while to the west the High Line and the gallery blocks lead toward Hudson Yards. On West 23rd Street the reopened Hotel Chelsea holds a Spanish dining room from 1930, a mirrored Art Deco bistro and a lobby bar under a chandelier, all a few steps apart. It is a neighborhood for a gallery walk and then dinner, or a martini first and a long meal after.
The picks below follow a date in order: somewhere to celebrate, a long dinner, then a place to keep the night going. Most of these rooms book through Resy, OpenTable or their own sites, and the popular tables go early on weekends, while bar seats are often kept for walk-ins. One steakhouse asks guests to skip very casual clothes. The A, C, E and L at 14 St–8 Av and the C and E at 23 St cover most of the list; the Hudson Yards rooms are closer to the 7.
For a celebration
A grand staircase, a wood-fired grill and art on the walls, for birthdays and anniversaries.

Crab dumplings and short ribs for the table
Buddakan · CHELSEA, MANHATTAN
Stephen Starr's restaurant beside Chelsea Market turns every arrival into an entrance: you walk down into a candlelit hall of gilded walls, chandeliers and a long communal table. The modern Asian menu is better than all that drama requires; share crab dumplings, short ribs and lo mein. Open since 2006, it is still a default for birthdays and anniversaries, so book ahead, especially for weekends.
- 02
The tableside raw-bar cart and a dry-aged steak
Crane Club · CHELSEA, MANHATTAN
Melissa Rodriguez and Jeff Katz, who opened Al Coro in the same Tenth Avenue building, cook here over a 12-foot wood-fired grill in a large room of banquettes and dark scarlet curtains. Start with the raw-bar cart wheeled to the table, then spaghetti frutti di mare and a 30-day dry-aged steak. Book on OpenTable and leave the very casual clothes at home.
- 03
Berbere-cured salmon
Hav & Mar · CHELSEA, MANHATTAN
Marcus Samuelsson's seafood room sits on the far-west gallery blocks, with original work by Derrick Adams in the dining room and bar and chef partner Fariyal Abdullahi running the kitchen. Order the berbere-cured salmon, a nod to Samuelsson's Ethiopian and Swedish roots, and a bottle from a list that highlights BIPOC and women producers. Book on the official site, then walk the 26th Street galleries first.
- 04
Tarte flambée, then hanger steak au poivre
Saverne · CHELSEA, MANHATTAN
Gabriel Kreuther's wood-fired Alsatian brasserie opened in March 2026 on the ground floor of The Spiral in Hudson Yards, with its applewood, oak and cherry fire in full view. Share a tarte flambée, onion-and-bacon or mushroom-and-Comté, then venison or hanger steak au poivre off the grill, and the cherry clafoutis with Kirsch ice cream. Book on Resy and sit facing the kitchen.
A long dinner
Basque pintxos, handmade pasta, Georgian bread and two old rooms at the Hotel Chelsea.
- 05
Gildas, croquetas and txakoli
Txikito · CHELSEA, MANHATTAN
Alex Raij and Eder Montero's narrow, wood-lined Basque room has been on Ninth Avenue since 2008, and it rewards a slow evening. Graze first on gildas, croquetas and thin-sliced squid in onion sauce with spritzy txakoli poured from a height, then decide on the cochinillo, roast suckling pig, if it is offered. Reserve on Resy; the bar seats go to walk-ins.
- 06
Bucatini con le sarde and warm sfinci
Pastai · CHELSEA, MANHATTAN
A Southern Italian pasta bar on Ninth Avenue, where the pasta is made by hand every day in an open kitchen and the wine list leans toward Sicily. Share the ricotta bruschetta with pistachios and spicy honey, then bucatini con le sarde or the paccheri alla Genovese, and finish with sfinci, warm ricotta doughnuts. Ask for the specials sheet first; call or check the site to book.
- 07
Seasonal paella and Basque cheesecake
El Quijote · CHELSEA, MANHATTAN
The Hotel Chelsea's Spanish dining room has been serving since 1930, and a careful 2022 renovation cleaned its old murals and kept a sandblasted-glass Don Quijote by the bar. Start with pan con tomate and gambas al ajillo, make the seasonal paella with its socarrat crust the centerpiece, and keep room for the Basque cheesecake. Book on Resy, or ask for the bar.
- 08
Steak frites or maitake au poivre
Café Chelsea · CHELSEA, MANHATTAN
The hotel's French bistro is an Art Deco room of mirrors, close-set tables and booths in the bar, with art from the Hotel Chelsea's collection hanging overhead. At night order the steak frites or the wood-fired maitake au poivre with cognac sauce; at weekend brunch, the brûléed pain perdu in the morning light. Reserve on Resy through the official site.
- 09
Adjaruli khachapuri and khinkali
Chama Mama · CHELSEA, MANHATTAN
Modern Georgian cooking on West 14th Street, in a warm, busy room where an open clay oven turns out bread all night. Share one Adjaruli khachapuri, stirring the yolk and butter into the molten cheese quickly, then khinkali by the piece and walnut pkhali, with a glass of amber qvevri wine. Book on Resy for dinner; the bar takes walk-ins.
Keep the night going
A lobby martini, a gin bar behind a secret door and flamenco nights on 14th Street.
- 10
The 1884 martini
Lobby Bar at Hotel Chelsea · CHELSEA, MANHATTAN
The Hotel Chelsea's restored lobby is now a bar for guests and neighbors alike: couches and armchairs, a marble bar under a big chandelier and a garden room that catches the afternoon sun. Order the 1884, the house martini with gin, cedro lemon, vetiver and Spanish olive oil, plus the fries. Come before dinner next door, and check the hotel's page for seating.
- 11
A gin you have never tried
Bathtub Gin · CHELSEA, MANHATTAN
Since 2011 this Prohibition-style bar has hidden behind a secret door at the back of a Ninth Avenue coffee shop, with bar stools, a dark room and the copper bathtub of its name. Gin is the focus, so ask the bartender for something new. Live music or DJs play most nights, which suits a celebration more than a quiet talk. Reserve ahead on weekends.
- 12
Gambas al ajillo and paella de mariscos
La Nacional · CHELSEA, MANHATTAN
Tapas and paella in the basement of the Spanish Benevolent Society, founded in 1868 on what was once Little Spain along 14th Street, at blue mosaic tables with wicker chairs. Order the gambas, the wild mushroom croquetas and a cold gazpacho; the seafood paella is for three or more. The society upstairs hosts flamenco and tango nights, so check the calendar first.
Every kitchen here was confirmed open as of 2026-10-19. Menus change — confirm a dish is on before you make the trip.
