Date Night in the West Village: Romantic Restaurants and Bars (2026)
A carriage house with a fireplace, a garden off Cornelia Street, Austrian schnitzel, fondue by candlelight and the bar behind a psychic's neon sign — where to take a date in the West Village, from dinner to the last glass.
12 restaurants

The West Village is made for walking slowly. Its crooked streets — Grove, Barrow, Bedford, Cornelia — are lined with old rowhouses and trees, and after dark the light from small dining rooms spills onto the stoops. Some of the most romantic rooms in Manhattan sit within a few blocks of each other here: a carriage house with a fireplace and a pianist, a garden behind a flower-filled front room, candlelit fondue on Hudson Street and an Austrian dining room hung with Schnabel paintings.
The picks below are grouped the way a date runs: a dinner for the big occasion, a long meal on a pretty block, then a bar seat for one more drink. Kosaka is just over the line on West 13th Street. Nearly everything is a few minutes from the 1 at Christopher St or Houston St, or the A, C, E and L at 14 St–8 Av. Booking runs from essential at One if by Land and I Sodi to walk-in lists at Via Carota and Employees Only, so check each page before you go.

Beef Wellington by the fireplace
One if by Land, Two if by Sea · WEST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
An 18th-century carriage house on Barrow Street long associated with Aaron Burr, with brick walls, a working fireplace, fresh flowers and a pianist. It has been the city's shorthand for a proposal dinner for decades, and it plays the part without a wink. Reserve well ahead through the official site, ask for a table near the fire and come early for a drink.
- 02
Wiener schnitzel, then Salzburger Nockerl
Wallsé · WEST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
Kurt Gutenbrunner's Austrian dining room has held a quiet corner near the river since 2000, with Julian Schnabel paintings on white walls, linen and low light. The schnitzel's crust puffs away from the veal; pair it with something from the Grüner Veltliner list. Order the Nockerl, a soufflé shaped like snowy hills, when you sit down, since it takes time. Reservations are recommended.
- 03
A Negroni at the bar, then the lasagna
I Sodi · WEST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
Rita Sodi's Tuscan room moved in 2023 from Christopher Street to 314 Bleecker, keeping its dark wood, low light and properly stirred Negronis. It is the quieter, dressier sibling of Via Carota, the one for an anniversary. Order the artichoke salad when it's on and commit to the many-layered lasagna. Tables go quickly, so book ahead.
- 04
Edomae omakase at the counter
Kosaka · WEST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
A twelve-seat Edomae counter on a quiet stretch of West 13th Street, with soft piano in the background and a Michelin star. Head chef Masatomo Soma spent thirty years under Yoshihiko Kousaka, and the fish is barely dressed, with a shiso leaf or a dab of yuzu kosho. Counter and table omakase book separately on OpenTable; take the counter.
A long dinner on a pretty block
Gardens, candlelight and plates meant for sharing.
- 05
Insalata verde and the svizzerina
Via Carota · WEST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
Jody Williams and Rita Sodi's Grove Street trattoria runs on rough wood tables, copper pans and seasonal vegetables, and it turned a plain green salad into one of the city's most talked-about dishes. It is largely walk-in: put your name down early, have a drink nearby and come back. Order the salad without debate, then the loosely packed chopped steak.
- 06
Seasonal Italian in the garden
Palma · WEST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
On Cornelia Street, one of the Village's prettiest blocks, Palma pairs a whitewashed, flower-filled front room with a garden and a restored carriage house in back. The cooking is seasonal, unfussy Italian drawn from the owner's family roots. Book ahead for weekend evenings and ask for the garden; in cooler months the carriage house is the next-best seat.
- 07
Cheese fondue for two and a bottle of chasselas
The Lavaux · WEST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
Three Swiss friends from the vineyards above Lake Geneva run this snug, candlelit wine and fondue bar on Hudson Street. Cheese bubbles in caquelons over a flame for bread, potatoes and pickles, and there is raclette too; drink a bright, mineral chasselas, a wine that seldom leaves Switzerland. The room is small and fills fast in winter, so reserve.
- 08
Bacalhau croquettes and piri-piri chicken on a fado night
Leitão · WEST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
A Portuguese corner room on Hudson Street with a bar, a dining room, a renovated cellar and, on some nights, a fado singer. Order the salt-cod croquettes and a glass of vinho verde, then piri-piri chicken or porco preto, and finish with warm pastéis de nata. Check the official site for fado nights and book there; the bar takes walk-ins when there is space.
One more drink
Bar seats, small plates and a last bottle before the walk home.
- 09
An off-menu cocktail at the bar
Employees Only · WEST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
Look for the neon psychic sign on Hudson Street: behind it is the art deco bar that working bartenders founded in 2004, run by a white-jacketed staff. Describe what you like and let them build a drink, and know that it serves a proper food menu too. It is mostly walk-in with a doorman, so go on a weeknight or expect a weekend wait.
- 10
Scallop aguachile negro and crab tostadas
Quique Crudo · WEST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
From the team behind Casa Enrique, a tiny Mexican seafood bar on Bedford Street with about twenty stools and a menu of small plates. As a pair, sit at the bar and order four or five: the aguachile with scallops, the fluke ceviche and a crab tostada or two, with a classic margarita or a carajillo. Book through the official site; some stools are kept for walk-ins.
- 11
A bottle at the horseshoe bar, with the bread and butter
Le Chêne · WEST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
A low-ceilinged Carmine Street room from Alexia and Ronan Duchêne, with Basquiat prints, Warhol flowers and a wine list that runs to thousands of bottles. Dinner is rich, old-school French, but the lighter move is the curved bar: split a bottle the sommelier chooses and add the green beans with tarragon yogurt if they're on. The bar takes walk-ins.
- 12
Coq au vin and a carafe of wine
Buvette · WEST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
Jody Williams's gastrothèque on Grove Street packs marble counters, tin ceilings and an espresso machine into a room the size of a Paris wine bar. In the evening it serves coq au vin and carafes of wine at tiny tables where elbows touch, and that closeness is the charm. Booking is limited, so check the official site before you go.
Every kitchen here was confirmed open as of 2026-10-19. Menus change — confirm a dish is on before you make the trip.
