Date Night in the East Village: Romantic Restaurants and Bars (2026)
A moon-viewing kaiseki counter, a candlelit farmhouse on Bond Street, a Belgrade tavern on Avenue C and a bar behind a phone booth — where to take a date in the East Village, from dinner to the last round.
11 restaurants

The East Village keeps its romance in small rooms. Behind the tenement fronts of St. Marks Place, First Avenue and the lettered avenues are candlelit taverns, a twelve-seat kaiseki counter, a Tuscan room with eight tables and a cocktail bar you enter through a phone booth. After dark the side streets stay busy and the bars fill early, and an evening can easily run from dinner on Avenue C to a nightcap on Lafayette Street, where the East Village meets NoHo.
The picks below are grouped the way a date runs: a dinner for the occasion, a candlelit meal to linger over, then cocktails to keep the night going. The 6 at Astor Pl, the L at 1 Av and the F at 2 Av cover nearly everything. Booking varies widely — Tsukimi is prepaid and non-refundable on Tock, Prosciutto is walk-in only, Death & Co works from a list at the door and Kafana is reported to be cash only — so check each page before you go.

Seasonal kaiseki at the counter, with the sake pairing
Tsukimi · EAST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
A twelve-seat counter on East 10th Street made to look like a moonlit room, with soft arches, mirrored panels and ceramics glowing on lit shelves. Takanori Akiyama's modern kaiseki changes with the season and holds a Michelin star, and co-owner Karen Lin, a sake sommelier, runs the pairing. Seats are prepaid and non-refundable on Tock; arrive on time, since every course goes out to the whole counter.
- 02
A risotto and a pasta to share before the mains
Il Buco · EAST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
Opened on Bond Street in 1994 as an antiques shop, Il Buco still feels like an old farmhouse, with copper pots on the walls, rough wood and candlelight. The risotto has a claim to being the city's best, and the bistecca and lamb chops are cooked with care, so order more than one main. Reserve through the official site and ask for the main room.
- 03
Five-cheese kulcha, then the yogurt kebabs
Bungalow · EAST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
Vikas Khanna's First Avenue restaurant draws on all twenty-eight of India's states, the kind of celebratory cooking you plan an evening around, and Michelin gives it a Bib Gourmand. Start with the stuffed flatbread and the kataifi-wrapped yogurt kebabs, add a cocktail spiked with turmeric or chili, then build around the curries. Book well ahead on the website.
A candlelit dinner
Small, warm rooms where nobody hurries you out.

Pasta at a table by the front windows
Gemma (at The Bowery Hotel) · EAST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
The Bowery Hotel's trattoria has rough wood beams, hanging copper pots, candle wax on the tables and a golden light that flatters everyone. The rustic Italian menu of pastas, wood-fired pizzas and simple grilled dishes is steady rather than showy, which makes it an easy second date. Book ahead, especially Thursday through Saturday, and ask for the front windows at dusk.
- 05
Shaoxing-wine blue crab and red-braised pork belly
CheLi · EAST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
A calm room just off St. Marks Place, under an indoor thatched roof with lanterns and the sound of running water, serving some of the most elegant Shanghainese cooking in the city. Eat the wine-soaked crab with your hands, follow it with the braised pork belly and ask what's seasonal. Dinner is busy, and reservations have reportedly been limited to larger groups.
- 06
Ćevapi with kajmak, prebranac and a Serbian red
Kafana · EAST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
A small, candlelit Belgrade-style tavern on Avenue C, with a handful of tables and Serbian songs on the speakers; on a cold night it feels like a friend's apartment with a very good grill. Start with the slow-baked white beans, move to the ćevapi and let the server choose a Balkan bottle. Call ahead on weekends and bring cash.
- 07
Coccoli with prosciutto, then the cotoletta alla bolognese
Prosciutto · EAST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
Eight tables and a few counter seats on East 9th Street, run by a small team from Pistoia in Tuscany. Begin with the fried dough puffs, prosciutto and stracchino, share a pasta such as the tonnarelli alla gricia, then split the breaded veal cotoletta. It is walk-in only, so arrive right at opening for one of the tables.
Keep the night going
Martinis, bartender's choice and Caribbean patties for the last round.
- 08
A martini on a banquette
Temple Bar · EAST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
The 1989 downtown lounge on Lafayette Street, reopened in its original space in late 2021 by a team including Attaboy's Sam Ross and Michael McIlroy. A long mahogany bar, low lamps, deep banquettes and caviar-leaning snacks make the first drink feel like an occasion. Arrive early on a weeknight for a banquette; walk-ins are welcome, but reserve on busy nights.
- 09
Bartender's choice at the bar
Death & Co · EAST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
The East 6th Street original, open since 2007 and one of the bars that shaped the modern cocktail era: candlelight, black walls and a long spec sheet. Ask for a bartender's choice built around a spirit you love. Seating mostly works from a same-night list at the door, so come early on a weeknight, put your name down and wait for the text.
- 10
A cocktail and a hot dog
PDT (Please Don't Tell) · EAST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
You step into a vintage phone booth inside Crif Dogs on St. Marks Place, lift the receiver and wait to be let into a small, dim room of banquettes and taxidermy. The drinks are among the most awarded of their era, and the hot dogs come from next door, so order one with the first round. Reservations are close to essential.
- 11
Pepperpot duck patty and a classic daiquiri
Bar Kabawa · EAST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
Paul Carmichael's daiquiri and wine bar sits down Extra Place, the little alley off East 1st Street, with a short menu of raw-bar bites and Caribbean patties. The fried patties have a laminated crust that shatters; start with the pepperpot duck with foie gras, then short rib with conch or geera goat. It takes reservations and keeps room for walk-ins.
