Hawksmoor
A British steakhouse under a 26-foot vaulted ceiling near Gramercy Park, with charcoal-grilled beef and a great-value lunch.
See current Google rating & reviews ↗Hawksmoor New York is the American home of the British steakhouse group, set inside the historic United Charities Building a few steps from Gramercy Park. The dining room is a showpiece, with a 26-foot vaulted ceiling, warm wood and a 35-seat bar, plus two private dining rooms for groups. The kitchen's philosophy is simple and confident. Beef comes from family-run farms, many of them in upstate New York, Pennsylvania and New England, seasoned with flaked sea salt and cooked over live charcoal, and there is shellfish and simply grilled fish for anyone not in a steak mood. It feels British in its hospitality and thoroughly New York in its scale: a grown-up room for a long lunch or a celebration.
Featured by the YouTuber New York Turk in 2025, Hawksmoor makes a strong case for steak at lunch. As of October 2026 the website lists a mix-and-match lunch of one, two or three courses for $25, $40 or $55, with steak frites at $25, unusually good value for a room like this. At dinner, the Steak Flight brings four cuts to the table, two Wagyu strips, a rib-eye and a filet, which is the best way to taste the range of the grill. Add beef-dripping fries and mac and cheese on the side, and save room for sticky toffee pudding, the British classic, or the peanut butter shortbread. Martinis are taken seriously at the bar, and Monday corkage is a modest $10 a bottle.
Editor’s tip
Book lunch rather than dinner for the same charcoal steaks at a fraction of the price, and take a seat at the bar if you are dining solo.
