ASTORIA, QUEENS
King Souvlaki of Astoria
Astoria's souvlaki truck since 1979 — hand-carved yeeros, house loukanika and a pita with fries inside.
Astoria knows its Greek food, and for decades the neighborhood's answer to where to get a souvlaki has been a truck under the elevated tracks on 31st Street. The family has been at it since 1979; the uncle's generation built the business, and the next generation still works the grill.
Order a pork or chicken souvlaki pita with fries tucked inside, and a link of the house loukanika — the Greek sausage they make themselves — charred on the grill. The yeeros are carved by hand. It is cash only, and the line, at night, is mostly locals.
Editor’s tip
Order a pork souvlaki pita and one loukaniko on a stick, bring cash, and eat it on 31st Avenue as the trains pass overhead.
