Ruta Oaxaca
Oaxacan moles and mezcal behind a pink sign on Broadway — mole enchiladas, choriqueso and smoke.
Oaxaca is the Mexican state of seven moles, and that is where this Broadway room points its kitchen. You'll know it by the bright pink signage; inside it is a lively, good-looking place with a long mezcal list, built for a night out rather than a quick taco.
Order around the moles. The pechuga en mole and the enchiladas bathed in dark mole are the centerpieces; a brighter mole coloradito turns up over steak. Start with choriqueso — melted cheese and chorizo with warm corn tortillas for building your own tacos — and drink mezcal, neat or in one of the house cocktails. Weekend brunch is popular, so plan accordingly.
Editor’s tip
Order one mole dish per person so you can compare, and ask for a mezcal flight.
