ASTORIA, QUEENS
Salvatoria Kitchen & Bar
Astoria's pupusa bar — over a dozen kinds, griddled to order, with curtido, salsa roja and a full cocktail list.
Pupusas are Salvadoran comfort in its purest form: thick masa rounds griddled until spotted, stuffed with cheese, beans or pork, and eaten with a heap of tangy curtido and a thin red salsa. Salvatoria has been making them on Broadway since 2016, in a lively room with a full bar and an enclosed patio that stays warm when the weather turns.
The menu runs to well over a dozen pupusas. Start with the revuelta — pork, beans and cheese together — and the queso con jalapeño, and add a chicharrón if you're with a group. Beyond the griddle there are fried yuca, plantain empanadas, carne asada and ceviche, and the cocktails make this an easy evening rather than a quick bite.
Editor’s tip
Order a revuelta and a queso con jalapeño per person, and don't skip the curtido.
