Fifth Avenue in Bay Ridge is one of New York's great Arab main streets, lined with bakeries, groceries and shisha cafes, and Nuthut is one of its sweetest stops. This family-owned and operated shop sells roasted nuts, seeds, coffee and Middle Eastern sweets, and walking in feels like stepping into a market stall in Amman or Damascus: bins of roasted cashews and pistachios, trays of baklava, boxes of Turkish delight and the deep smell of freshly ground coffee. Everything is halal. It is a shop rather than a restaurant, but it is exactly the kind of place that shows how a neighborhood eats, celebrates and gives gifts.

New York Turk stopped in on his Arab food tour of New York in 2025. Start with a bag of the house nut mixes, the salted Brooklyn Mix or the barbecue-spiced Ramallah Mix, and try the smoked Afghani seeds or the Abu Nugta watermelon seeds that regulars crack by the handful. Coffee lovers should take home the Nuthut Special Blend, a Turkish roast, and anyone with a sweet tooth will want baklava, maamoul, dates, Syrian raha or chocolate-covered nuts. For a host gift or a holiday visit, the shop assembles gift trays. It is open seven days a week, which makes it an easy add-on to a Bay Ridge dinner.

Editor’s tip

Pair a bag of the barbecue Ramallah Mix with a pound of the Turkish-roast Special Blend coffee.
