GREENWICH VILLAGE, MANHATTAN

NY Dosas

A Sri Lankan cook's vegan dosa cart in Washington Square Park — the Vendy-winning Pondicherry dosa, eaten under the trees.

Thiru Kumar grew up in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, learning to cook from his grandmother, and he has been making dosas from this small cart in Washington Square Park for well over a decade. Students, professors and dog walkers form the line; Thiru works the griddle and talks to all of them. The cart once won the Vendy Award, and it still behaves like it has something to prove.

Everything is vegan. Order the Pondicherry dosa — the one that won him the prize — or a classic masala dosa filled with curried potato, served with coconut chutney and a cup of sambar. Carry it to a bench under the trees near the arch, and you have one of the most pleasant cheap lunches in Manhattan.
