IllustrationRuddy & Dean sits on Richmond Terrace a few minutes' walk from the ferry slips, with windows looking across the harbor to lower Manhattan. Owner Danny Mills named it for his two grandmothers; the Mills family rebuilt the building and reopened it as Ruddy & Dean in July 2000, and it has been St. George's special-occasion steakhouse ever since — the room for anniversaries, graduations and a dinner before a game at the ballpark beside the terminal.
The method comes from the grandmothers too: steaks seared in cast-iron pans and finished at high heat. Order a steak with a couple of the house sides to share, and lean on the seafood and daily specials if someone at the table skips beef; there is a kids' menu for families. The rooftop is used for events and casual dining in season. Ask for a window table at sunset, when the skyline turns gold across the water, and time your walk back to the boat.
Editor’s tip
Reserve a window table for sunset, then walk back for a ferry while the skyline is lit.
