JACKSON HEIGHTS, QUEENS
Tong
Bangladeshi fuchka with tamarind water from the truck that started the craze on 73rd Street.
In Dhaka, a tong is a roadside tea stall, and this little truck on 73rd Street brought Bangladeshi street snacks to Jackson Heights when it opened in 2018 — by most accounts the first to sell fuchka here. Several other fuchka trucks now park nearby; Tong is still the one to find.
Order the fuchka: a ring of hollow, puffed puri filled with spiced yellow peas and potato, topped with raw red onion and grated egg, with a cup of tamarind water to spoon into each one before it goes in whole. Sweet, sour, sharp and hot at once. The bhelpuri is a good second order.
Editor’s tip
Bring cash, eat the fuchka right at the truck so the shells stay crisp, and pace yourself with the tamarind water.
