JACKSON HEIGHTS, QUEENS
AMDO Kitchen
Beef momos with red and white sauce from a Tibetan truck at the foot of the 74th Street subway.
Jackson Heights has the city's deepest Tibetan and Nepali food scene, and this big white truck on 74th Street, right by the subway, is where many people start. It is named for Amdo, a region of the Tibetan plateau, and there is a narrow counter on the side where you can stand and eat.
Order the beef momos — thick-skinned, juicy, generously filled — and use both the red chili sauce and the white sauce from the squeeze bottles. The truck also sells noodles, fried rice and rounds of amdo bread. Phayul, the Tibetan restaurant across the street, makes a natural second stop.
Editor’s tip
Order beef momos, ask for the radish pickle on the side, and eat at the counter while they are hot.
