ASTORIA, QUEENS
Villa Brazil Cafe Grill
A Brazilian per-pound buffet with a churrasco window in Astoria — picanha, sausage and chicken hearts off the skewer.
Astoria's Brazilian community eats the way much of Brazil eats at lunch: comida por quilo. A buffet of rice, beans, farofa, salads, stews and fried things; you fill a plate, it goes on the scale, you pay by weight. Villa Brazil does it in a small, busy room on 34th Avenue, and adds the thing that makes it worth the trip — a churrasco window.
Take a plate from the buffet, then step over to the grill, where the meat comes straight off the skewers: picanha with its cap of fat, sausages, chicken, hanger steak, and chicken hearts for the curious. Beef ribs are the reviewers' favorite on days they appear. End with tres leches, and know that you can eat very well here for not very much.
Editor’s tip
Keep the buffet plate light and save room for picanha from the churrasco window.
