The Jazz Gallery is a fifth-floor loft on Broadway near 27th Street, founded in 1995 by Dale Fitzgerald, singer Lezlie Harrison and trumpeter Roy Hargrove. It is a nonprofit, not a bar: rows of chairs, no food service, and a listening audience that came specifically for the band. Since 2002 it has commissioned new work from young composers, and a lot of what later shows up on major labels and festival stages is first played here, in a plain white room with a piano.

Tickets are sold per set on the Gallery's site, usually with an early and a late set, and many nights are also livestreamed. Members get reduced prices, which adds up if you start going regularly. The entrance is on 27th Street; take the elevator up. It is the right room when you want to hear where the music is going rather than where it has been, and it suits going solo since everyone faces the stage.
