GREENWICH VILLAGE, MANHATTAN

The Marlton Hotel

A Left Bank hotel hiding on West 8th Street, with beat-generation ghosts and a fireplace lobby.

The Marlton occupies a 1900 building on West 8th Street that spent decades as a bohemian residential hotel — Jack Kerouac wrote here, and the guest ledger of the beat years reads like a syllabus. Its 2013 revival leaned into Paris rather than nostalgia: herringbone floors, brass sconces, crown moldings, and rooms the hotel itself cheerfully calls petite.

The small scale is the charm. The lobby, with its fireplace and espresso bar, works as the Village living room it was designed to be, and Washington Square Park is a two-minute walk. For travelers who would rather spend on dinner than on square footage, it is the neighborhood's smartest base.

Editor’s tip

Treat the lobby as your living room — morning espresso by the fireplace beats taking it upstairs.
