You walk into a small contemporary art gallery on West 8th Street, and only then find the restaurant behind it: a sixteen-seat C-shaped counter wrapped around an open kitchen. The art on the walls is for sale, and the exhibition, menu and pairings all change every four months.

Chef Franco Sampogna and co-founder Bernardo Silva opened FREVO as a single tasting menu served at the counter, and it has held a Michelin star every year since 2022. It is one of the most intimate ways into the city's top tier, and a good deal gentler on the bill than the grand rooms.

Editor’s tip

Ask for counter seats over the corner tables — the point is watching the kitchen work.
