Cipriani Downtown is the SoHo branch of a Venetian dynasty. The family story begins in 1931, when Giuseppe Cipriani opened Harry's Bar in Venice, where he created both the Bellini and carpaccio, and the business is still run by his son Arrigo and grandson Giuseppe. On West Broadway between Broome and Spring Streets, this outpost keeps the classic Cipriani grand decor, the polished, old-world look of the house, but Time Out notes a slightly younger crowd and more of a party atmosphere than the original Harry's Bar style uptown. It is a place to see and be seen, and to feel very much in Manhattan while you do it.

New York Turk dined solo at Cipriani in 2025, which is a fine way to experience it: a seat by the window, a cold Bellini and the theater of the room. Order the drink first, since this is the family that invented it, then the beef carpaccio, the other dish born at Harry's Bar. From there the menu runs through Italian specialties and Harry's Bar classics, from pastas to risotto. Expect top-tier Manhattan prices and a lively, well-dressed room in the evening; lunch is calmer. Smart dress fits the setting, and reservations are wise, especially on weekends and during fashion weeks.

Editor’s tip

Order the Bellini and the carpaccio, the two Harry's Bar inventions, and book lunch for a calmer room.
